Hazer Group’s Commercial Demonstration Plant at Woodman Point, south of Perth, converts biogas from wastewater treatment into low-emissions hydrogen and synthetic graphite. From the outset, the plan included using a share of that hydrogen to generate power on site — turning the plant’s own product into the electricity that helps run it.
That meant installing hydrogen power generation inside an operating, regulated industrial facility: a fuel cell system fed directly from the process stream, integrated with the plant’s electrical infrastructure, and compliant with Australian hazardous-area and gas safety frameworks. The technology was proven; the harder question was whether it could be permitted, installed and operated safely within an existing plant.
The engineering challenge: deliver a compliant, three-phase hydrogen power system inside an operating chemical facility — fed straight from the plant, and cleared to run by the regulator.
THE BRIEF
Prove hydrogen power can live inside Australian industry
ENERGYS’ SCOPE
What Energys delivered
Energys acted as design authority and manufacturer, and carried the regulatory engagement — from product development and hazardous-area compliance through to commissioning and ongoing operational support.
-
Energys engineered a three-phase configuration of its 10 kW fuel cell power system for direct connection to the plant’s hydrogen supply and electrical infrastructure. Hazardous-area classification and compliance work was carried out for the installation, and Energys prepared the technical documentation required to demonstrate safe hydrogen utilisation under Australian regulatory and industrial safety frameworks.
-
The system was manufactured and assembled at Energys’ facility in Victoria, as a compact, standardised package housing the fuel cell stack, battery, hydrogen handling and balance-of-plant. Factory testing verified performance and safety functions before shipment to Western Australia.
-
Energys engaged directly with the Western Australian regulator, DEMIRS, and received written confirmation that the system could operate within the facility. The system was delivered, installed and commissioned on site in 2025, with Energys providing ongoing operational support to the plant.
THE SYSTEM
10 kW Three-Phase Fuel Cell Power System
A 10 kW PEM hydrogen fuel cell power system, developed in-house as a standardised telecommunications- and industrial-grade product, configured here for three-phase AC output and installed within an operational hydrogen production facility.
The system draws hydrogen directly from the plant’s production process rather than from on-board storage. System architecture incorporates hydrogen handling systems and a compact fuel cell power system package with a footprint of 2.2 m² that houses balance-of-plant, a 15 kW PEM fuel cell stack and a 6 kWh LiFePO4 battery.
Deployed at Hazer Group’s Commercial Demonstration Plant, Woodman Point, Western Australia.
