Green Marine Work Boat, Energys Fuel Cells, Receives AiP from RINA

In a landmark achievement for maritime innovation, Green Marine UK's hydrogen Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV) fuel cell retrofit initiative, powered by Energys' advanced marine fuel cell technology, has been awarded an 'Approval in Principle' (AiP) by the renowned classification society RINA. This endorsement signifies a critical step forward in integrating hydrogen fuel technology within the maritime sector.

Project Verdant, the initiative's name, aims to retrofit CTVs with hydrogen fuel cells and batteries, significantly reducing emissions while servicing offshore wind farms. The completion of the preliminary design and feasibility study, which constitutes Phase 1 of the project, has validated the approach's feasibility, paving the way for subsequent design and engineering phases.

Energys' Hydrogen Marine Fuel Cell Expertise Integral to Project Verdant

Energys, a global leader in marine hydrogen fuel cell technology, was responsible for the entire hydrogen system, including the specification, configuration, and design of hydrogen tanks, pipework, and the fuel cell system. This comprehensive involvement ensured the project's technical soundness and safety. Energys also provided the necessary documentation to achieve AiP for the hydrogen component of the project. The company worked closely with all project partners on Hazard Identification (HAZID) and systems integration, employing sophisticated Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling to optimize the integration of hydrogen systems.

Dr. Noel Dunlop, Vice President and Founder of Energys, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Energys is thrilled to play a critical role in this market-leading marine project. The marine hydrogen industry is expanding rapidly, particularly in Europe, and the selection process for projects like this is highly competitive. I am extremely proud that the Energys team was able to provide the type of lead-edge expertise in design, engineering, and modeling that made it possible to chart a smooth course to RINA AiP. It’s a strong endorsement of Energys’ leading position in marine hydrogen fuel cell solutions".

The Powerhouse is modularised and housed in transportable ISO shipping containers for ease of transportationEnergys', a Global Leader in Marine Fuel Cell Product Range and Capabilities

Energys offers a comprehensive range of hydrogen fuel cell products for the marine industry, from small-scale 90-kilowatt generators to multi-megawatt systems. Their products are designed for various applications, including recreational crafts, small ferries, workboats, and auxiliary shore power. The systems are modular, scalable, and designed to meet international safety standards, making them suitable for both new builds and retrofits.

The company's marine fuel cell systems are distinguished by their high energy density, reliability, and safety. With a proven track record in some of the world's harshest environments, including off-grid applications in Australia and Saudi Arabia. Energys' expertise in hydrogen technology and their commitment to innovation have positioned them as a leader in the global market for zero-emissions hydrogen fuel cell generator systems.

A Significant Step for Marine Fuel Cells

Project Verdant is set to revolutionise the CTV market by demonstrating the practical application of hydrogen as a marine fuel in the UK and Europe, with the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 30% and NOx emissions by up to 40%. This initiative aligns with the global maritime industry's goals to reduce emissions and transition towards more sustainable energy solutions. As the project progresses, it is expected to pave the way for more widespread adoption of hydrogen technology in the marine sector in Europe and beyond.

Jason Schofield, Managing Director of Green Marine UK, emphasized the project's importance, stating, "Obtaining AiP was a key objective for Project Verdant, providing confidence in the CTVs’ ability to operate safely in UK waters in accordance with the MCA regulations. This initiative significantly de-risks the implementation and testing of hydrogen fuel-cell vessels in the coastal environment. Once the concept has been proven up, there is potential to rapidly replicate, leveraging economies of scale and removing barriers to adoption"

A Global Pioneer in Marine Fuel Cells

The selection of Energys for this pioneering project underscores the company's technical maturity and market readiness. As the marine hydrogen fuel cell market continues to grow, Energys is well-positioned to lead the way, providing reliable, safe, and zero emissions power solutions that meet the stringent requirements of modern maritime operations.
