Most hydrogen used in Australian industry is grey — made from natural gas. Energys set out to build Victoria’s first commercially focused green hydrogen facility for business-to-business industrial supply: a 1 MW PEM electrolyser at Hastings, powered by grid electricity during periods of surplus renewable generation and low wholesale prices, supplying zero-carbon hydrogen to industrial, transport and stationary energy customers, including Energys’ own fuel cell customer base.
The site sits beside an operating hydrogen liquefaction plant run by Coregas, Australia’s first producer of liquid hydrogen, which under a strategic agreement will operate the facility and manage compression, liquefaction, cylinder and trailer filling and distribution. That adjacency is the project’s strength and its engineering test: every interface between new production infrastructure and a live hydrogen handling facility had to be designed, agreed and approved before a shovel touched the ground.
The engineering challenge: carry a green hydrogen production facility through whole-of-plant design, brownfield interface management, planning approval and procurement — to a package ready for construction.
THE BRIEF
Take a green hydrogen facility from concept to construction-ready
ENERGYS’ SCOPE
What Energys delivered
Energys acted as developer, design authority and procurement lead — developing the facility architecture, site-wide electrical infrastructure and interfaces with the adjacent operating facility, securing planning approval and delivering a construction-ready EPC package.
-
Energys developed the whole-of-plant architecture: a 1 MW PEM electrolyser producing 18 kg/h of hydrogen at 99.999% purity, integrated with compression to 450 bar, bulk high-pressure storage at 500 bar, and dispensing at 200–350 bar to suit vehicle and cylinder pressure ratings, on a 1,300 m² site. A hazardous area classification assessment was undertaken as part of the design to AS/NZS IEC 60079.10.1:2022, with areas classified and documented in the classification report and drawings.
-
Energys designed the site-wide electrical infrastructure interconnecting the electrolyser containers, compressors and control systems with the 22 kV grid incomer, kiosk switchgear, metering and low-voltage distribution. Interface management between the new production infrastructure and the operational hydrogen handling and liquefaction facility ran throughout: the refuelling platform was designed in close coordination with Coregas to fill its hydrogen cylinder packs, matched to their cylinder configuration and refuelling requirements.
-
Energys secured planning approval for Victoria’s first commercial B2B green hydrogen facility after 18 months of dedicated engagement with the Victorian planning system. Technical specifications and a procurement package were developed to enable construction, and a competitive tender was run with quotations sought from suitably qualified contractors and multiple submissions received and evaluated. The detailed design and procurement package has been delivered to enable future construction.
“This project positions Victoria at the forefront of green hydrogen innovation.”
THE FACILITY AS DESIGNED
Hastings Green Hydrogen Facility
A grid-supplied green hydrogen production facility designed for business-to-business industrial supply, developed adjacent to an existing hydrogen liquefaction plant at Hastings, Victoria.
At its core is a 1 MW PEM electrolyser producing 18 kg/h of hydrogen at 99.999% purity, powered by grid electricity during periods of surplus renewable generation and low wholesale energy prices. Hydrogen is compressed to 450 bar and stored in bulk high-pressure storage at 500 bar, with dispensing at 200 to 350 bar to suit vehicle cylinder types and pressure ratings, and a refuelling platform designed to fill Coregas hydrogen cylinder packs.
Site-wide electrical infrastructure interconnects the electrolyser containers, compressors and control systems through a 22 kV kiosk and grid incomer, switchgear, metering and low-voltage distribution, on a 1,300 m² site. Under a strategic agreement, Coregas will operate the site and manage all downstream logistics including compression, liquefaction, cylinder and trailer filling and distribution.
Planning approval granted 2025. Detailed design and procurement package complete.
